A local café, Cranky Coffee is calling for design proposals for a new mural to freshen up a concrete wall in an outdoor seating area. The proposed mural design should offer an aesthetically pleasing, playful and inviting backdrop for customers to dine and relax beneath.

Size A1

Required A 2-part portrait drawing (diptych) based on the theme of Duality. A diptych is a single artwork consisting of two panels, to be displayed side-by-side.

Style The colour, style, choice of materials and mark-making techniques will support the ideas you are exploring, and you will explain these in your rationale.

Elements Part 1 of the Diptych will portray one concept while Part 2 will portray the opposite

A well resolved tile that has shown exceptional skill in modeling clay and considered patina. You have successfully resolved the background allowing for the whale to project of surface and the background to receded backwards based on transparent application of paint.

Morphing Hands

Explore associated symbolism associated with other three-dimensional forms which could extend out from the wrist.

Make a plaster bandage cast of each of your hands up to the wrist in the appropriate position according to your own research and design

Press clay into the cast

Extend additional clay from the hands and model into a single form

Monitor drying

Once dry fire the clay and plaster in a kiln

Again you have showing great technical skills in the making process. You have managed to retain detail and texture from the original casting of the hand and has not been lost in the patina process. The hand composition is dynamic based on the sense of movement of the creature. Well done.

In this assignment, you will explore various artistic techniques and materials to create concepts and artworks. Document your process, materials, and ideas in a journal throughout the task.

Construct a small piece using organic materials like twigs and strings, optionally adding colour or stain. 

Make a detailed observational drawing of the entire object on one A2 sheet, using graphite pencil or pen.

On two prepared surfaces, draw closely cropped sections of your sculpture. These drawings should occupy at least 60% of the picture plane.

Sculpture - Your sculpture is dynamic in composition based on the differing facets. Although there is a great sense of movement your material quality complements each other. Further from different angles, you sculpture has created some very interesting compositions. Well Done 

Drawing - Great use of material and variation of texture on surface. Your composition is considered in ow you have balanced positive and negative space. Further you could consider place a drop shadow in the composition to ground the object.
